About

Documentary filmmakers who work inside hospitals.

We film real shifts, with real consent, and no staging. In a hospital, the best light is the one already on — and the best moment is the one that actually happened.

Two Penny Healthcare is the hospital documentary practice of Two Penny Productions, a film studio rooted in Livonia, Michigan (Metro Detroit). We are not a medical marketing agency that picked up cameras. We are documentary and narrative filmmakers who learned how hospitals work — shift change, consent, privacy, and the unspoken rule that the clinical floor always comes first.

Our crews stay small: typically two to four people. We shoot with feature-film craft — cinema cameras, real color grading, documentary pacing — but never at the cost of the unit we are in. We work nationally with health systems, foundations, and academic medical centers, and we bring the same low-footprint approach whether we are in an ICU in Texas or a clinic two counties from home.

What we do best is wait. We wait for the real moment, get consent for it, and protect the people who gave it. The films that come out of that patience are the ones candidates remember, donors cite, and staff share on their own channels.

Our process

How we work inside hospitals

Filming in a hospital is a privilege that can be revoked in a single afternoon. Our process is built to make sure it never is — and that the films we deliver are useful across every channel a hospital needs.

01

Discovery with hospital leadership

We start with the people who own the outcome — marketing, HR, the service line chief, the privacy officer, and the foundation lead if the film supports a campaign. Together we define what the film must do, who it must move, and who has to say yes before anything is scheduled.

02

Sensitivity & compliance planning

We walk the unit with charge nurses and managers, map sightlines, and identify what the camera will never see. Then we build a HIPAA-aware consent and release workflow with your privacy office — one that protects patients, families, and staff at every step.

03

Discreet filming

Two to four people. Available light wherever possible. No stands in corridors, no cables across thresholds, no clinical staff waiting on us. We shadow before we roll, follow unit protocols, and never interrupt the work of caring for people.

04

Cinematic editing

The edit is where the story becomes a film. Real color grading, original score, and documentary pacing turn raw moments into something candidates, donors, and communities remember. Families and clinical subjects review before administrators do.

05

Delivery for every channel

We deliver master films plus cutdowns optimized for recruitment sites, social platforms, websites, gala screens, internal town halls, and press kits. Then we stay engaged to measure what actually moved — applications, referrals, gifts, and engagement.

What we measure

Films built for real hospital outcomes

We do not quote attribution-free percentages. We build every film around a clear outcome and then give you the asset you need to move it.

Applications

Films that help candidates see the unit before they ever interview.

Referrals

Profiles and department stories that introduce physicians to other physicians.

Donor conversations

Family-impact films that give major-gift and campaign conversations a human center.

Internal culture

Stories that remind current staff why they stay and help new hires feel at home.

Meet the team

The people in the room

Same small team from start to finish. Everyone on this list has worked inside clinical environments and understands the pace, the privacy rules, and the stakes.

Hyun Suh, Director / CEO at Two Penny Productions

Hyun Suh

Director / CEO

Leads direction with documentary discipline, especially in sensitive clinical environments where trust is built shot by shot. Born in Seoul and trained at the Motion Picture Institute of Michigan, Hyun treats filmmaking as a team sport: everyone anticipates the next move without a word.

Adam Haller, Producer / CFO at Two Penny Productions

Adam Haller

Producer / CFO

Produces hospital projects end to end, balancing clinical access, schedules, and budgets so crews stay small and departments stay whole. After years of production around the world, he is back home in Michigan with his wife and three kids.

Robert Skates, Cinematographer at Two Penny Productions

Robert Skates

Cinematographer

Cinematographer who keeps a low footprint in ICUs, ORs, and trauma bays, framing real moments under real hospital light without staging. Rob works with Two Penny because, as he says, if you are going to spend that many hours away from your family, the people beside you should be people you would invite into your home.

Lyndsay Cwiertniewicz, Media Creator at Two Penny Productions

Lyndsay Cwiertniewicz

Media Creator

Focuses on patient and family interviews and the consent workflow that protects them. Lyndsay came to Two Penny through a love of technical craft and found her niche making sure the people in front of the camera feel safe and heard.

John Burr, Media Creator at Two Penny Productions

John Burr

Media Creator

Quiet, steady presence on clinical units, building trust quickly with staff so the camera can disappear. A graduate of Specs Howard School of Broadcast Media Arts, John has been with Two Penny since 2012 across a wide range of documentary and narrative work.

Hannah Roll, Marketing Director at Two Penny Productions

Hannah Roll

Marketing Director

Connects hospital leadership to film strategy, making sure deliverables map to recruitment, fundraising, and service-line channels. A Michigan State University graduate with a background in psychology, English, and documentary production, Hannah loves the technology but says the most rewarding part is learning about people on every project.

Origin

Friends who stayed because the work mattered

Hyun Suh and Adam Haller started Two Penny Productions after the Motion Picture Institute of Michigan, joined by their professor Robert Skates and local filmmaker John Burr. It began the way most honest studios do — a group of friends making art together and refusing to grow out of that shape.

The healthcare work grew from a few clinical documentary projects. We saw what happened when a film treated a hospital with documentary patience instead of marketing gloss: candidates recognized the unit, families recognized their own story, and staff recognized the value of what they did every day. The stakes were higher. The access was harder. The work meant more. We stayed.

Seventeen years later, we are still a small studio based in Livonia, Michigan. We still pack the truck the night before. And we still believe the best shot is the one that actually happened.

“The film didn't sell our unit. It just showed it. That turned out to be the same thing.”
